Product metrics

Track product metrics that explain what users actually do

Useful product metrics connect a number to a meaningful user action and a decision. Vectr4 gives SaaS teams event, funnel, session, and journey context so a metric can be investigated instead of reported as an isolated total.

01

Choose metrics from the product value path

Start with the sequence a successful customer completes, then define a small metric for each important transition. This keeps the scorecard tied to actual product behavior rather than whatever numbers happen to be easy to collect.

A metric needs a precise event definition, owner, time window, and known limitations. Without those, teams can discuss the same label while calculating different things.

02

Separate active users from meaningful activity

Daily or monthly active users only become useful after the team defines active. A visit may be enough for a content product; a SaaS workflow may require a completed task or other meaningful event.

Vectr4 captures page activity and named events. Define active with the signal that matches the product instead of treating any SDK activity as equivalent value.

03

Measure activation and conversion as event sequences

Activation is the first demonstrated product outcome, not automatically the first login. Conversion is movement between explicitly defined steps. Vectr4 funnels connect those events and expose where the expected sequence stops.

Review the surrounding sessions before changing the product. A drop-off number identifies the location of friction, not its cause.

Vectr4 example

signup_submitted → workspace_created → first_event_received

04

Use feature adoption and engagement metrics carefully

Feature adoption

Eligible users who complete the feature’s meaningful outcome event.

Usage frequency

How often that outcome appears in the selected period or across sessions.

Workflow completion

Users who reach the final event in an expected sequence.

Return activity

Useful actions appearing again later, without claiming a dedicated retention calculation.

05

Keep session and journey context behind the metric

A top-line count can move while the underlying experience gets worse. Sessions show the sequence and timing around a metric event; user journeys show paths across the product. Use both to investigate movement in a scorecard.

Continue to user behavior analytics for sequence analysis or the product analytics dashboard for the product view.

06

Avoid vanity metrics and unsupported precision

  • Do not optimize total events when event volume is not itself a customer outcome.
  • Do not compare periods without checking releases, instrumentation changes, and time-window definitions.
  • Do not call repeat activity retention unless the calculation and cohort rules are defined.
  • Do not collect extra personal data just because it might support a future breakdown.

07

Build a compact scorecard for an early SaaS

A practical early scorecard may contain one activation funnel, one completed core-workflow event, one conversion path, and one carefully defined active-user measure. Keep the list small enough that the team reviews and acts on it.

Use event analytics to validate each input and engagement analytics to examine meaningful repeat behavior.

Event activity

Inspect named product actions and the bounded properties sent with them.

Funnels

Connect ordered events to examine progress and drop-off between steps.

Sessions

Review activity as a timed sequence without relying on screen recording.

User journeys

Follow paths through a product for anonymous and identified activity.

FAQ

Product metrics questions

Which product metrics should an early SaaS track?

Start with a defined activation outcome, a core workflow completion event, a conversion funnel, and an active-user definition tied to meaningful use.

Is every event a product metric?

No. Events are inputs. A metric applies a definition, scope, and time window to answer a recurring product question.

Does Vectr4 provide a dedicated retention metric?

No dedicated retention report is claimed. Teams can inspect repeat events and journeys without presenting that as a formal retention calculation.

How does Vectr4 help investigate a metric?

Vectr4 connects named events to funnels, sessions, properties, and user journeys so teams can inspect the behavior behind a change.
